Malibu High School and Middle School
Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District

This exciting project consists of site improvements to support new and renovated school buildings, including both new and reconfigured parking lots, high school and middle school quad improvements, a new Administration /Library building, tennis courts and addition of synthetic turf field. The project, located within the coastal zone of Malibu on Morning View Drive, required both DSA review and submittal to the City of Malibu for approval related to its conformance with the Local Coastal Plan (LCP).

Civil Engineering: BREEN's involvement includes site demolition plans; horizontal controls; grading and drainage design; utilities including domestic and fire water, sewer and septic improvements, gas and storm drain systems and the design of fill disposal sites. A sophisticated storage and re-use concept was employed for stormwater management.

MEP Engineering/Fire & Life Safety: Included are comprehensive MEP and Fire Protection design for new science, teaching and administration buildings for the high school, and upgrade of Building E on the existing campus at Malibu Middle High school. Work included new parking lot lighting, new fire alarm system.

Santa Monica High School and Tech Building & Site Improvements
Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District

Santa Monica High School is a large facility on a relatively small site. Goals of the new Science and Technology Building include maximizing structural space while maintaining the existing amount of parking, relocating a displaced softball field, and replacing an existing natural sod football field with synthetic turf.

Civil Engineering: The addition of the synthetic field created a significant impervious area. For BREEN to meet the City’s stormwater management requirements, alternatives for limiting run-off had to be explored. Deep infiltration wells were initially proposed, but the infiltration rate was not conducive to such a limited interface. Currently, pervious pavements with large, gravel-filled percolation beds below are being designed to allow for a greater infiltration area and storage volume. Also included are site dimension, grading and utilities plan

Fire & Life Safety: BREEN provided new fire protection (sprinkler) design throughout the school.

This school is located in the City of Malibu and poses special challenges in grading for accessible routes and parking due to its hillside location. Site improvements include a new parking lot, separate pedestrian drop-off and parking areas with associated fencing.

Civil Engineering: The proposed southerly parking lot posed a unique design challenge for stormwater management due to the stringent local codes in the City and its close proximity to existing septic leach fields, requiring that increased surface runoff does not leave the site. BREEN has proposed the alternatives of either using a porous asphalt pavement under the new parking to allow for infiltration and treatment, or a storage system to allow for a slow release of treated water, either into the ground or into the existing off-site storm drain.

Fire & Life Safety: Included are designs for a completely new automatic fire detection and alarm system to be installed within all buildings while the school remains fully occupied.

Civil Engineering: Prepared a preliminary Design study for sewage treatment and disposal, including a Fixture Unit Survey Report and a Schematic Diagram for suggested treatment locations and associated piping.

MEP Engineering: Design included upgrade and replacement of the underground gas line and replacement of existing classroom furnaces with new energy efficient units, including new controls for enhanced energy savings.
