The project consists of the design and construction of a new park in the City of Los Angeles - Watts Serenity Park, a name selected by the local community. For ecades, 1.13 acres of land on Monitor Avenue in Watts lay vacant and unmanaged. When plans for a housing development fell through, local residents came together to support the creation and planning of a welcoming and safe place to help address the severe lack of outdoor recreational space available to their community. The Trust for Public Land generated the opportunity for residents to discuss and incorporate their ideas to truly make this a park of the people.
BREEN collaborated with TPL and EPT Design to create a multi-faceted park designed to be culturally aware, sustainable, and fun. The final designs included features that honor the site’s history, such as picnic pavilions reminiscent of the area train stations, play equipment for kids, a Fitness Zone® exercise area for adults, and a skate park. Funded by Proposition 84.
