This award-winning design consists of an entirely new urban elementary school project on a challenging 3-acre site on Firestone Boulevard in the City of South Gate. The structures consist of a three-story classroom building, including a preschool and one-story auditorium/cafeteria. A faculty parking lot, elementary playground, soccer field, preschool yard and grand entrance surround the buildings.
An Extremely flat site with no storm drains in the street, stormwater management options were limited. To solve the problem, a periphery of 26-foot-deep infiltration wells were designed, which collect, treat and infiltrate stormwater, with overflows through curb face drains. This approach to stormwater management was showcased to the students and general public as an innovative approach to a problematic site. Breen’s design included demolition plans, horizontal controls, grading, drainage and utility construction documents, as well as offsite street improvement and street lighting plans prepared in accordance with the City of South Gate Department of Public Works requirements.
MEP: A new street lighting plan was designed for Firestone Blvd. and Willow Street using LED lights per City of South Gate’s new standards. Also developed were street lighting master plans for the city’s future use.
